Why Restrict the Waste?

Skips are the best cost-effective solution to moving and disposing of large quantities of waste. Every size can help you dispose of all the waste you don’t want to be left lying around. However, there can be safety risks with some items that people want to get rid of. That’s why we have waste restrictions, to ensure everyone involved in disposing of your waste, is kept safe.

Our Restrictions

All skip companies have their own rules and regulations as to what can or can’t go in their skips. This can get confusing sometimes as to who accepts what, that’s why we’ve decided to list ours here. If these aren’t followed legal action can be taken agaisnt you. Here are our restrictions:

POPs – Upholstered Furniture

New government legislation known as POP or Persistent Organic Pollutants has been introduced at the beginning of 2023. This changes the way we dispose of upholstered furniture such as sofas, armchairs, and footstools. If they are disposed of incorrectly they can cause serious damage to the environment and living things including animals and humans. For this reason, they should be processed, stored, and destroyed at an appropriate facility. We can help with the disposal of these items, however, this will incur a POP charge. Please contact us for further information and let us know to avoid extra fees.

Electrical appliances

Electrical Appliances and Equipment

These sorts of items can potentially cause harm to others which is why we don’t allow them in your hired skip. If you’re in doubt, if your appliance has a plug, batteries, or needs a charger then it needs to be disposed of elsewhere. All electrical appliances and equipment should be taken to an electric recycling point. Find your local one here.

Restricted Mattress

Mattresses

We are happy to assist you in the responsible disposal of your mattress for an additional cost of £45-£50 + VAT per mattress. If this is the case you must inform us before placing it in your skip.

Plasterboard Hazard

Plasterboard

If you’re doing construction work and need to get rid of 1 or 2 bin bags worth of plasterboard/drywall then you can place those bags on top of your normal general mixed waste. However, if you place more than that, and in no bags, there can be a fine of around 50% of the original hire price of your skip. If you need to dispose of large amounts of plasterboard, please contact us to hire a plasterboard-only skip.

pile of used batteries

Batteries

The chemicals, such as lead, within batteries, can cause harm if they leak. This is why before they go to the landfill they need to be properly cleaned and this can only be done if they are sent to an appropriate facility. This applies to all sizes including AAA and car batteries. Battery bins can be found in supermarkets, petrol stations, and various other locations.

Old asbestos requiring disposal

Asbestos

Asbestos is one of the most dangerous materials found in old buildings, if you are exposed to it with no protection it can lead to increased chances of lung disease and cancer. If you come across any asbestos, please contact a specialist with the appropriate equipment and experience.

Stack of old gas cylinders for recycling

Gas Cylinders

There is always remnants of gas that remains in “empty” gas cylinders. This is flammable and is why they are restricted from going in our skips. They need to be taken to a specialist center and you can contact the supplier of the gas cylinder and they can sometimes give advice on how to dispose of them. In some cases, you can have the chance of selling them back to the supplier because they can re-use them.

Medical waste, used syringes and medicine bottles

Medical Waste

The term medical waste can include many items including PPE, needles both used and unused, anything containing bodily fluids, and any other medical equipment. All of which are restricted to prevent serious illness and injury to our skip operators. We ask that you research the Department of Health for more information.

Waste Restricted Glass

Glass

As glass is sharp when broken, we don’t want to risk injury to our skip operators. However, we do understand that a general waste skip will contain small amounts from normal loads of rubbish. Please keep the quantity of glass at a minimum. We can supply glass-only skips for anyone with large amounts to dispose of.

pile of used tyres for disposal

Tyres & Other Items

We can sometimes assist with the removal and disposal of tyres and other items made up of rubber for an added cost. All skip companies have their own rules and regulations especially when it comes to what can and can’t go into their skips. So if you’re ever unsure about an item, don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you out. Although, no matter the restrictions, skips are still a really helpful resource.

Used paint tins, fuels and solvents.

Paint, Solvents, and Fuels

Though we may be stating the obvious, these three items are strictly prohibited from going in your skips. These items can cause serious harm if not disposed of properly. They are at risk of combusting and need to be thrown away by professionals who know how to responsibly handle them. Contact with these items can sometimes cause serious chemical burns and other serious injuries so we restrict them to eliminate this risk. They must be taken to a licensed disposal center.
